United Polaris vs American Flagship Business: U.S. Carrier Comparison

For U.S.-origin Business Class travel, United Polaris and American Flagship Business are the two flagship domestic premium products most relevant to transpacific and transatlantic itineraries.

Polaris is generally strongest on long-haul international widebody routes, with lie-flat seats, premium bedding, and Polaris Lounges at major hubs. Flagship Business shines on premium transcontinental and select international routes, with Flagship dining and enhanced lounge access.

Because both products vary by aircraft, we always verify the specific tail and layout: a Polaris-labeled domestic flight may not include the international hard product, and the same caution applies to American’s Flagship branding.

United’s newest Polaris seats (777-300ER, 787-9/10, and retrofitted 767s) offer direct aisle access and strong privacy. American’s Flagship suites on the 777-300ER include sliding doors on select configurations.

Seat quality on older 767s and narrowbodies can lag — aircraft selection matters more than the brand label on the booking.

Polaris Lounges (Newark, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington-Dulles) offer shower suites and dining. American’s Flagship Lounges (JFK, LAX, MIA, DFW, ORD, PHL) provide comparable premium spaces for eligible tickets.

Both beat standard club lounges materially; access rules depend on fare class and whether the itinerary is international or premium transcon.
