The seat doesn't tell you the fare class

Airlines typically sell several business-class fare buckets on the same flight, distinguished by a single letter code, each with different pricing, change fees, refundability, and mileage-earning rates. A fully flexible fare and a deeply discounted business fare can put you in the identical seat while carrying very different rules.

Why fare class affects more than the price

Fare class often determines mileage or elite-qualifying credit earned on the flight, whether same-day flight changes are permitted, and how significant a change or cancellation fee applies if plans shift. It can also affect priority for operational upgrades, in the rare cases those are offered.
